Reorganizing the actions panel

Reorganizing the actions panel

Postby Seizure » Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:05 am

Yup. I think the order of the actions is a bit silly, so I thought I could help out by suggestion how to fix this.

Right now, the main menu has a maximum of 6 options. Adventure, Build, Combat, Craft, Government, and Prayer. This leaves 10 open slots.

The Adventure Menu is cluttered. Several things can be moved to other places easily. I -HATE- having to go to the 2nd panel to turn on/off swimming and tracking.

Build Fire should be under the Build Menu.
The Travel and Landscaping menus should be moved out of adventure and put on the Main Menu. Most likely on the second row, Landscaping first then Travel, then Government then Prayer.
It wouldnt hurt to have the Dig action moved under Landscaping too.
Leave Village, Form Village, and Stake claim should be under Government. (not entirely sure about stake claim though) Form Village should not appear if you are already part of a village, just like Leave Village does not show up if you are not part of one.

The adventure menu could also use a little reorganization.
Criminal Acts and Tracking should be next to eachother. Destroy and Repair should be next to eachother.

Now for the Build Menu. The Quern should be moved to be under Stone Working.
Construction Menu. Should probably be first Cabin, Mansion, Cellar, and Vending Stand. Then Kiln, Oven, Smelter, Finery forge and Steel Cruicible. Then the village items.
The order of walls should be reversed. Roundpole Fence, Palisade, Brickwall.

Beehive should switch places with the clay cauldron.

Combat. Attacks should be moved so unarmed, melee moves are next to each other, in order of dmg (for simplicity sake). Would be best to go, unarmed, Melee, Archery. Just to preserve the order that is in our character sheet. That is all I dare say about that. The moves and special moves would be hard to organize sensibly, and I doubt I can do it.
Manuvers should probably start with Dodge, Shield, then the rest in whatever order pleases you.

Craft Menu. Ceramics, Teapot should go before Mug... Just seems odd to me this way.
Cooking Menu. Boiled egg, Fried egg top layer. Flour, Butter, Butter-steamed Cavebulb, Roasted meat. Grist and Wort need to be next to eachother.

Leatherworking... First row hats, second row leftover hat and leather armor. Dont know about the rest.

Metal Working. Armor. Should be Body Armor top row, from weakest to strongest at base Q. Then helms the same.
Weapons need the same. Militia, Bronze, Soldiers, B12.
Then, the order of items should be Bar of Bronze and Wrought Iron first 2 slots. Then Metal Bar, Nuggets, Coins, Tankard. The rest w/e.

Tools. Fishing Gear should be easiest to make to hardest. Obviously this will be an approximation, because such things are open to interpretation. I dont fish, so my opinion is a bit worthless here.
Ranged Weapons. Sling, Bow, Rangers Bow. Then the arrows.
Rest of the Tools. Besides having the water bearing items together, this seems fine. Maybe move Metal Saw to Metal Working... But that might confuse people. Wood cutting tools together naturally.

Govornment and Prayer I cannot really help with. There are few enough options I dont see it mattering much.

My small contribution to the C&L forums. Thoughts or suggestions on different orders are welcome.
Obviously, this isnt exactly a priority... But I do think such a thing will help greatly in the end.

Some good ideas, though I admit my mind wandered when you got into the specifics. Your suggestions regarding the adventure menu would be a good improvement, though.

The buttons appear in alphabetical order right now, iirc. I think Loftar said it would be nontrivial to change :\

I support decluttering the Adventure menu, though. Everything else it more or less organized.

I think he only said that because he's against having intelligence in the UI. There's absolutely no reason you couldn't have the UI be aware of preferred order, or even add a preferred order number to the message that tells the UI about buttons.

I don't hotkey destroy as I almost never use it.

I only hotkey repair when I'm doing a lot of repair

my client only has 10 hotkeys though rather than pacho's 20, so I frequently find myself swapping out hotkeys
