Tables and work benches

Postby ImpalerWrG » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:06 am

Looking over the furniture we have presently one is struck by the absence of tables, specifically ones for eating off of or for working at. The Herbalist table is more of a 'Transmuter' that converts specific items into other ones and dose not satisfy the need for a kitchen table or generic work table. Adding a table would round out things nicely but the table would need to be of some practical usage, I've got some ideas they generally fall into functions to support eating tables and ones to support working tables.

Eating:

* Food can be placed on an eating table (5x5) and an "Eat All" button would be available which auto eats until full and stops before becoming overfilled
* A small bonus to FEP (5-10%) while eating at a table
* Some energy is recovered while eating at a table

Working:

* When executing a "Craft All" and a table is open all of its contents will be treated as if they were in your inventory and used for crafting
* Any tool on the table when it is open will be considered equipped for the purposes of crafting which opens up the possibility of more tools without causing the player a lot of tool switching headache
* Crafting speed is increased slightly when working at a table

I don't know if it would be better to have just one type of table or two or even if perhaps herbalist table should become a generic work table but some kind of table you can sit at would really be a nice touch.

I like the idea of a 'work bench' being a craftable inventory to work out of that essentially increases one's productivity by the very nature of being able to craft more shit in one go.

The lack of a table to eat from DOES stand out starkly as you say. I don't know if the proposed mechanics create desirable game-play though.

Stuff like dining tables will have to wait for Wyrd, I think.

And something like stove - fuel-powered thing that acts like campfire, but can be turned on and off. Maybe with some time to "heat" itself, and built with use of iron or steel.

A Wyrd producing ritual at a table would be consistent with what we know of Wyrd but would probably require another person for the social angle, though I don't think it needs to wait for Wyrd before it can be implemented. As for Stoves I don't understand at all why Ovens don't just work that way (turn on and off), but in any case I don't see why they would be a pre-condition to having tables.

Also I should have mentioned that the eating table would probably use a chair for you to sit in and make the eating special effect available (what ever it is). Perhaps a chair when being placed kind of temporarily 'fuses' with the table and from then on you can select "Sit at table" from the chair, though you still access the tables inventory like a normal container whether seated or not.
