Redesignating Gate Keys

Postby McGriddles » Sun Mar 07, 2010 6:03 am

What it is: With building palisades and brickwalls comes a problem. If you have mutliple gates the keys pile up quickly. I've read Chakravanti's idea, or atleast I think it was his idea, to have key rings. Sounds good and I support it, but could it be possible to also redesignate keys for which door they unlock?

How it works: Using the Lock & Bolts skill you have the ability to quickly recraft a current key to use on another lock for a gate that is on your claimed property. Each key can only unlock 1 door at a time.

How it benefits: Cuts down on how many keys you need. It would allow you to give your friend a key to a gate on short notice. Allow you to rely on less resources. Allow for more flexablity in property managment.

Issues: There is a possibility of abusing this by constructing gates for the purpose of making keys to designate to other gates. However, with the resources and time required to build cornerposts and gates it would make more sense just to make a new key using wrought iron.

Notes: Other things that aren't crucial to the main idea but still relate; the possibility to create a Master Key which has the ability to unlock more than 1 door (could help clear up a cluttered key ring).

I think that just having a gate make a key in the first place is a bad system, it implies the Ex nihilo creation of metal which is inconsistent with the great pains necessary to obtain it. Allow gate to be created which simply have an 'open' and 'close' option that anyone can use, they will at least keep out animals. Then a locksmith can upgrade them using 1 bar of metal (for the lock) and 1 nugget of metal which would create the key. If a bar of metal and an existing key is used then the new lock uses the existing key rather then generating a new one. If a locksmith has the current key to a lock he can remove the lock and get back some of the metal used. Keys could be melted for a nugget of metal in forges. I think that's all you'd need to do to have a useful and flexible lock system, you can do many-2-many relations and change locks if needed.

If you were to do that then newer players and newer villages would be way more vulnerable to higher level players, who can trespass on claims, and more established villages. So the free key you get makes it easier for players to protect their items. Does it make sense that a key comes from no where? No, but it makes sense to have it.

Or in short, make it so that one key can be used to open multiple doors?

Not necessarily. Just be able to take one key from another gate and re-craft it so that you could use it on another gate. You could use 1 key and keep recrafting every time you wanted to use it on another gate (unless you were to make it degrade every time you did), but that would get tedious. This idea is more for in case you were to lose a key and didn't have access to iron yet, you would still be able to make due until you could make a new one.

What's to stop me from using my keys on your gates?

The key given to you can only be used on the gate it was initially designated for. You can't re-craft it to be used on another person's claim.

Meh, that's lame. I do however like the idea of a single key opening multiple gates. Designated as the time of construction somehow.
