Bonfire thoughts

Postby Peter » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:00 am

I spent the last 8 hours fueling a big burnpile in my IRL front yard, and couldn't help think of how much I'd rather be PRETENDING to move brush around than actually doing so. As I was doing this, I was thinking about the often-suggested Bonfire, or large camp fire. Here's my thoughts on implementing that.

If the Devs feel like going with the Numen system they where planning, how about building a Big Bonding Bonfire allows you to get one Numen point per minute per simultaneous fire-watcher, a formalized way of allowing groups to get points for cohesion and communication- because what else are you going to do, while your character sits and watches the fire, but talk?
Of course, numbers can be adjusted and systems added to avoid afk abuse, but that's the basic idea.

On a fire-related-tangient, I found out the traditional method of case-hardening metal- or, making a metal tool with a hard, but more brittle, exterior and a soft but resilient core, making it durable and keep a good edge. The way this is done starts with making taking powdered animal horn and using clay to hold it in place around the entire tool. The ball of clay is then put in the center of a very hot fire and let to sit for some specific time. When the tool has cooled- SLOWLY!- it can be removed and is now improved. I don't know what you may think, but it seems as much like a magical process as a technical one. Rituals like these seem to fit the theme of magic in H&H much better than windblades, mana potions, and spells.
Surprise.

The BBB sounds like a interesting idea but I agree might need some anti-afk or anti-alting measures to prevent someone from making an alt army to gather points.
Does chatting prevent going afk or would you have to right click the fire again to return to active status.

I don't really like the case hardening idea because of how easy it is to get q100+ bones to harden q10 tools into something much better, I think it would put people who find mines first at too much of an advantage.
