Cartography

Postby Jfloyd » Mon Jun 22, 2009 4:57 am

I figure since there isnt a world map. Players can make their own.
With the cartography Skill:
Players will create a world map for themselves
They'd have to stop, take a moment to survey the area, then that spot is added to the map.
They could draw routes on their map when they open it up. Also, they could set what they want to be the center. So some might have the RoB as theirs, others might have there home town.
EDIT:
This could also give use to that empty slot on the radial menu.

But there is a world map.

I was thinking. I think it should add all the roads and man-made buildings to your minimap. That'd be a nice thing, so you know what to avoid.

This would certainly solve the problem of peoples tinny excluded homesteads being revealed when nobody else has ever seen them. There would still be no way of stopping someone else from coming and mapping your area though but still I support this idea.

for a new world I might also prefer it if there wasnt a worldmap available at the start, and instead it would come to the players to make their own, perhaps go scouting. if this cartography skill gets included that could become a drive for the more "exploration" orientated players.

how about making an option to export the map you made into PNG with a timestamp?

edit:

about outdated maps, well thats cool to, that way players who value their map kan keep exploring

edit 2:

Perhaps it should also be possible to share/sell portions of your map with other players? by inscribing them on parchment. ((kind of like a consumable item so when you use the map you lose the map, but add the geographical knowlage to your map. the real problem here would be... tracking most resent versions of a map. perhaps this van be done with a sepperate colour chanel which keeps track of what 'was explored when' 256 degrees of how old is this info..?))

You'd have to go back, and just use the "scout" skill again, it and would update the area. I think that'd work just fine.

I, too, would like something like this, and I've been thinking quite a lot about it. It wouldn't be very hard to implement or anything, but there is the problem of where to save the data. To keep all historical versions of the map on the server would require quite a lot of storage space; more than I can swear to be able to keep up with. Keeping a "latest seen" version of the map on the client would be quite easy and solve the problem, but then one wouldn't be able to see the entire map one had collected when logging in on another computer (since the data would only be saved on the client computer used at the time).

That'd be fine with me, since I only use the computer in my room to play. Also, how hard would it be to implement the "You set the center of your map" ida?

If I've taken the time to implement UI for a world map, that part would be the easiest thing in the world. :)

I think it is more likely that a world-map feature will be centered on the minimap interface, though; in which case the "center of the map" would always be your current position. [Disclaimer: Nothing I say on the forum should ever be construed to be a definite statement about the future of any planned or non-planned feature. ;)]
