Chisels

Postby niltrias » Wed Jun 10, 2009 12:05 am

Just a small idea...how about a chisel, maybe 1 cast iron and 1 wood, halves the time to chip stone if equipped?

The pickaxe already reduces the time it takes to chip stone, but I agree a chisel would probably be more suitable.

Chisels, Caves, Stoneworking

Postby Fjorn » Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:47 am

First suggestions: Chisels
Two kinds: Stone and metal. Both speed up harvesting the chipping of stone (metal is better, obviously)

Caves:
Equip a chisel
Adventure -> landscaping -> smooth stone

Smooths the stone floor inside a cave, making it act almost like pavement (No houses mainly, but other things that make sense... such as not being able to plant grass on it)

A metal chisel is far faster than stone

Main use: claims, roads (for carts), and walls (to secure cavemines)

hm, another use for chisels could be faster runestones maybe? and maybe they could change the statue of the chieftain so you made a (liftable) statue out of a boulder (natural or from a cellar) instead of 100 stone chips... that always struck me as odd anyway.

I like this idea. Caves need more love.

The ability to map caves (even if you had to walk the whole cave) would also help.

Also I've heard that caves can have multiple entrances and cave system can link together entrances over a large area, I've tried to fully explore a few caves and have never seen anything like this can people confirm if its true? If not it would be great to add it though I doubt it can be added until the world is regenerated. Also the ability of mines to 'break into' caves would be awesome and make mines feel more like part of the world and less like little pocket universes, having caves in mountains is also a must.

I couldn't help but feel this way have been inspired by Dwarf Fortress the whole way through reading it, I expected you do suggest engraving but smoothing the stone is close enough xD

But yeah, a chisel does sound like a good idea, and caves DO need more love.

Yes, because suggesting anything to do with caves automatically makes you go 'This was inspired by DF'

IT couldn't possibly be my attempt to make caves more useful... and cavemines defensible...

Large Stoneworking Idea

Postby Fjorn » Thu Apr 08, 2010 2:54 am

I apologize if any of this sounds peremptory or whatever, this is just a suggestion.

The idea is to change tech tree from this:
(Pottery is listed because of brick walls)
Code: Select all
Primitive tools \--> Pottery
                 \-> Stoneworking --> Masonry

To this:

Code: Select all
Primitive Tools \--> Pottery
                 \-> Stoneworking \--> Masonry ----------------/-> Fortifications
                                   \-> Advanced Stoneworking -/

And here is a proposed list of new skills and old skill changes:

Old Skill: Metalworking
-Can make a metal stone chisel, metal nugget + branch (maybe same as metal saw... wrought iron only)

Old Skill: Stoneworking, child of Primitive Tools
-Can make a stone stone chisel, stone chip + branch
-Loses ability to turn boulders into querns/runestones
-Can extract cellar boulders from large boulders
-Querns and runestones only able to be made from cellar boulders

Old Skill: Masonry, child of Stoneworking
-Can turn cellar boulders into stone blocks
-Stone Mansion needs Masonry to place, and stone blocks to build, isntead of stone chips
-Enables the building of brick walls, if you also have the Yeomanry and Pottery skills

New Skill: Advanced Stoneworking, child of Stoneworking
-Can build stone quarries (I am thinking anywhere on mountain tiles... but maybe also add stone geology points? I don't know...)
-Stone quarries produce stone blocks (Q is either Q of the rock build on, or a function of skill and tools maybe?)

New Skill: Fortification, child of Bricklaying, Masonry, and Advanced Stoneworking
-Can build stone walls out of rock blocks, if you have the Yeomanry skill
-Maybe stuff like Guard and Watch Towers, Outposts, etc as well
