In Game Chat

Postby Omniwar0801 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 12:48 am

Ok so im not very Techy but i have some ideas.

First I played a MMO that had a global "Game Chat" This was by far the best part of the game. You didnt have to talk or even have the window open but anyone in the world could talk. Usually the experienced players would be in there chating with each other and you could always ask questions and it would get answered pretty quickly

There of course were rules for this chat like Language and what not, Basic public etiquette.
This feature made the Community a very tight nit thing. anyone could talk on there and as long as you didnt act like a big noob then everyone had a good time and no one really ridiculed people for asking stupid questions.

And yes i know this isnt very realistic but neither is the ability to teleport to your hearthfire.

Another thing that i would like to see is that I hate when i am typing something out and then a message will pop up like a build screen or someone inviting you to their party and then your no longer in the message window and you are hitting all shorts of hotkeys. This is very annoying.

Just some food for thought.

Oh, God, I left my village on accident so many times because of crap like that. (I have no idea if that was fixed but it hasn't happened again since I started playing).

Also, on the off chance this implemented, it definitely needs to be optional because I hate global chats with a passion hotter than the searing flames of a thousand white-hot suns. (Perhaps unfairly so given past experiences and personal inclinations).

In the meantime I believe we have a thriving IRC community for people who don't lock up when they try to interact with more than ten people at a time. That last part is self deprecating.

Well why do you hate Global chats. and like i said it would be a close able window unlike area chat which i think should be close able. or the messages chat. I dont need to see that and i think it should be an option so I can have more chat windows up that are actually pertinent to me.

I, for one, don't like the idea of a world-chat (though Jorb has challenged me on that from time to time). I think it destroys the shattered feeling of the Haven world that I like so much. Right now, you cannot ever feel that you have any kind of complete knowledge of the world. A world-chat would negate a large part of that.

You may want to try IRC, though: #haven on irc.synirc.com. I don't mind that, since not everyone is connected.

I just think that it would help out with People who are new to the game and are Complete noobs. They either dont know about forums or just choose to ignore them. And would Make Meeting people and finding Neighboors and just building a sense of community with other people.

The game already has global chat. Nobody uses it because it's not obvious and it clears when you close it.

Ctrl+C (in b4 deprecated :3)

The game, to me at least, seems to be intentionally off-putting. I can't speak for your intentions, Loftar, but it seems that way. Although the learning curve is only so steep because nothing is officially explained, with the how-to being notoriously out-dated.

Sorry, I skimmed over the part where it was optional in your example and it wasn't clear elsewhere.

I dislike global chats primarily because I hate being in any large group (be it face-to-face or all just a couple dozen chattering on an IRC channel) and because, the Internet being what it is, it's generally got as many useless twits in it as it does useful folks. I've had particularly poor experiences with SAGA Online (I think that was it, anyway) and Dungeon Fighter Online (which, like its cousin, Maple Story, actually had people paying for the privilege of spamming your chat).

But as long as it's optional I really don't give a damn. I can see loftar's reasoning for not having it, though.

Oh God, they don't use it because it's a huge ass window and totally not worth the UI space. I think people try to forget that horrid thing on purpose.

World Chat!!!

Postby Xanthic » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:05 am

Okay, maybe some people know about it but lets face it most people don't. Hit ctrl-c and a pop-up window comes up, for 'world chat'. OMFG! The game doesn't have to be so bloody lonely!
Now to stab at Jorbykins and Lothylots... why not move said 'world chat' down and into the standard GUI? Put it into its own channel like 'village' and all that wonderfullness. Then we can talk to eachother!!! Heck, we could even do wonders with a 'trade' channel, and even a 'help' channel!
Imagine the wonders we could do with a communication network aside from the forums, (which do work but are a slower means of reply and conversation.) Come on, think about it!!! If the channel exists already it can't be too extensively difficult, and it'd be nice to hear from other players and talk actively.
If rules were meant to be broken we would have called them ribs instead.

having a channel to ask for help would have helped me not drown my first char right after a bear had eaten my face off and bended some limbs in ways they should not bend, so yeah would a great help if it would just get added to the standard channels :D
