An idea - Churches and Priests

Postby iezerith » Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:04 pm

I had an idea today at class, which I think should be put in the game.

First give the game a new skill, called something like "Prayer" or something "God-related".
Then put in the ability to build Churches in the game if you have something like 15 Prayer and 15 Carpentry
When you build a church, you can Right-click it and get the option "Become Priest". Once you become a prist you can do the following:
  • Buff other players. Say you have 20 Unarmed Combat, and they have 10, they will have 30 - etc, etc.
  • Heal other players, and yourself. Can take a certain time, but it's quicker then gauze.
  • In Combat, when using a ranged weapon, Aiming is twice (?) the speed.
  • If you die, you get to keep 75% of your stats, and you spawn as a regular character, but you have the choice to become a priest without a church.
  • All animals that normally agro on you doesn't agro anymore - except bears.
  • You get three new clothings in the Cloth Making tab - Priest Gown (Full suit), Halo (Boosts prayer 25%) and Sandals.

Now, if you become a priest some things will be disabled for you.
  • As a priest, the "Fighting" tab is completely gone. You can't fight OR protect yourself.
  • All crafting except clothing, leather and jewelry will be disabled.
  • You can only build a church if you live in a village, and trying to build a church outside a village will drop your health 25% SHP. (God is EVIL!)
  • All clothing except the specific clothes in the ABOVE list will be unavailable.

There should also be a limit to 2 priests, and one church, per village, or else the village gets flooded.
----

So tell me what you think! Would it be a cool idea? :D

Well first of all, I think it's best if religion stays out of this game.
Also it sounds a bit too much like magic, which the devs hate.

Well, we won't need a REAL religion or any religion wars like RS has at times (OMG GUTHIZ OWNS NO HE DOESN ZAMORAK DOES LOL U GUYS SUK SARADOMIN PWNS). One fictional god for the whole game.

And I didn't know the devs hated magic :<

Secondly, priests and churches sounds distinctly judeo-christian.

Well, you could name them whatever you wanted, as long as the basic Idea still applies... :/

Druids and shamans seem more appropriate. Its practices should be available to anyone without artificial restrictions. Those who put most effort in those practices get most "benefits". I placed benefits in quotes because effects must be just over the edge of symbolic. Far from magic and purposeful specialization only in this field.

Thou shalt put no gods before the devs. For their names are Jorb and Loftar and they created the world... nay, not in seven days like some slap shod mono-diety, who doesn't even know the meaning of beta testing, but over the course of multiple years with worshiper input.

That aside, I think it's established that ancestor worship is the closest thing to a faith, and anything approaching a cleric would be somene who specialized in hearth magic, doing dowsing and the like. Plenty of people have build shrines the devs, complete with baskets full of sacrifices.

If you're interested in being a priest, why don't you build yourself a temple, decorate with taste and then help people track down the weird stuff for their ancestor quests? It seems like there's a niche you could fill. The game includes a scavenger hunt where the ancestors demand absurd items like bloody bandages, and taking donations of useless crap, stock piling it and sharing it out for a small fee puts you in a religious role. Maybe Constantinople would like you to move in and offer faithful guidance to the locals.
