If it's going to be real BBQ then some sort of cooking based on time should really spice things up. After all, BBQ isn't something you cook in 20 minutes. That's grilling.
So you'd probably need some system that requires you to throw fuel on the fire once and a while. Possibly in a set up like an oven, so you can cook multiple pieces of meat. Slow cooking is a very good way to make poor, tough, cuts of meat into something delicious, so BBQ and other methods could be used to let you make a final product that's vastly superior to just roasting. Either raising the QL or providing more FEP for your ... uh... meats.
Edit: Another useful cooking tool for slow cooking would be a dutch oven. Which could be buried in the coals left from fires to make stews.
