Here's a terrible idea that makes sense

Postby Peter » Sun May 02, 2010 5:43 pm

A lot of people are going to hate me for this...

Why not make all construction signs entirely passable; construction cannot be completed if there is an item or unit within the clipping area.

The long-popular exploit of the construction-sign hunting fence will vanish. It will be far easier to navigate a small, busy claim.

It will also be possible to block a construction by standing in it's area; this makes some sense, as you can't expect to be able to build a house while a raving barbarian is charging at you. The increase in opportunities to grief will be similar to the ones that are being gotten rid of with the removal of construction fences. The net effect would be a marginal decrease in griefing, as one would have to go up and grief in person...

The large-scale effect of this would be to make hunting-goods much more valuable. A lesser effect would be less getting locked in invisible construction mazes.
Surprise.

Could players still access the build site if it had no bounding box?

Presumably the sign would still exist. One would build in exactly the same way, standing on the edge of the box that the construction will occupy.

The construction sign is there precisely to ensure that the building has enough space available upon completion.

Construction sign abuse is the only thing that makes missile hunting viable for people other than high level players who can one-shot animals. Hunting would need to be revamped before this exploit is fixed.

That's not exactly true. I have plenty of success with the deaggro -> hide behind tree so aggressive critters don't reaggro -> aim and fire strategy. (Granted this is with a 50+ sling). Also, gate trapping.

That said Marksmanship could stand to be generally more viable (without bug/mechanic/whatever abuse) (especially as I was dumb enough to invest heavily in it again), I agree.

What about disabling collision only for animals in combat and players?

Does it really make sense for players to be able to walk through a big pile of construction materials (some half built) ?

I believe the reaction to bears destroying construction signs was to start using boats, the exploit will always exist so long as the animals pathing can be blocked and the animal is too dumb to run away when it can't reach you.

Players may currently walk over fallen trees, crops, items on the ground, etc. How would walking over construction materials be different? Hunting from boats, especially bears, is extremely limiting.

All in all, I agree with spectacle, if anything is done to quell the use of construction signs as a method of hunting, the whole system needs to be rebalanced. I also think that the status quo is ridiculous.

Nice necro :P

What I meant was that players pick up the boats and place them in the form of a bear trap.
Boulders and carts and wagons all work in a similar fashion.

Letting bears demolish fences didn't have nearly the impact you would have expected.
