Unhappy that vending stalls can be stolen from

Postby Quasic » Tue May 04, 2010 4:13 am

I know I am just discovering something that old hands have dealt with before, and also this is why there are no markets, no economy, no currency.

ANY FOOL CAN JUST SNAG ANY DAMN THING FROM VENDING STALLS.

So, um. I guess fuck trade, fuck building a local currency. Great job!

Yes, I'm bitter.

By snag do you mean steal? Coz a snag is a sausage in my country.

Explain what happened and how this post is a suggestion for improvement.

I would guess he build a stall, put some stuff in it, and someone with theft stole from it?

It seems the post is a critique more than a suggestion/idea

Stealing from a vending stand does, on the other hand, always leave Theft scents (whether it is claimed or not).

If it weren't possible to steal from them, then they'd be unbreakable vaults.

You can still bust up stalls can't you? What happens to the contents when you destroy one?

Good to know, I reckon they should be pinata's just like the boats and carts.
After all, you'll leave a vandalism scent won't you?

Either way, a vault that can be destroyed is not unbreakable, it's impregnable ;).

It's good for trade if the village protects traders as well as their villagers.

Such as Trader A sets up a stand. Scents are made as someone steals from it. Big guys with swords that like to stabby stab help you track down and murder(or beat down to a near death pulp.) the given individual and probably get your stuff back. Win. Perhaps recruiting your own personal body guard/hunter to help assist you or making your guy pretty tough might be a good idea as well.

Well, let's put it this way:

Trade with vending stands requires a high skill ranger to protect them. That in turn requires a hearth vault to protect the ranger. The hearth vault requires bricks, steel, other players to help produce materials etc. So in order to use a vending stand you require a village's level of organization.

But if you have a village's level of organization, why would you leave your goods in a vending stand, instead of storing your good safely, making deals directly with the sellers, and using crossroad travel?

The kind of people who would like to use vending stands are probably the kind of people who don't have the resources to protect them.

It does need a bit of tinkering before we are going to see vending stands parked at river forks and along public roadsides. Exactly what tinkering I don't know. Between buyers unable to get copper coins and sellers unable to both allow general access and to protect the stands at the same time they are definitely not in common use.

Vending stand in popular town=high sales ratio but also high risk of things being stolen. Perhaps having the village have a "guard" on duty so to speak at least one person on at the time throughout the day or at a designated "vending time" to watch vending stands would be a good idea. It would be especially easy if you designate the vending stands only in one area.

Trading deals between individuals would generally be more time consuming. That & passerby traders won't have the same clientale as the village in question and thus it would be better for them to set up a vendor stand & with proper security or just plain ol' a lot of people around generally the steal ratio could quite frankly be reduced a lot.

Basically proper village organization/maintenence=Good trading opprotunities.

Perhaps instead of a currency you would be able to let's say trade for an amount of items or a specific item.

Such as You want to trade 5 tin for 5 copper. So the person with a copper mine would pop on by, stick in five copper and send that through and receive the 5 tin. They could alternatively steal it still, though.

The other thing I think we need is an actual trading interface between individuals. Just dropping stuff on ground for trades(or storing it. XD) isn't very proper. I know you guys will probably laugh at me but I mean a trading interface like Runescape has.
