Trade with vending stands requires a high skill ranger to protect them. That in turn requires a hearth vault to protect the ranger. The hearth vault requires bricks, steel, other players to help produce materials etc. So in order to use a vending stand you require a village's level of organization.
But if you have a village's level of organization, why would you leave your goods in a vending stand, instead of storing your good safely, making deals directly with the sellers, and using crossroad travel?
The kind of people who would like to use vending stands are probably the kind of people who don't have the resources to protect them.
It does need a bit of tinkering before we are going to see vending stands parked at river forks and along public roadsides. Exactly what tinkering I don't know. Between buyers unable to get copper coins and sellers unable to both allow general access and to protect the stands at the same time they are definitely not in common use.
Vending stand in popular town=high sales ratio but also high risk of things being stolen. Perhaps having the village have a "guard" on duty so to speak at least one person on at the time throughout the day or at a designated "vending time" to watch vending stands would be a good idea. It would be especially easy if you designate the vending stands only in one area.
Trading deals between individuals would generally be more time consuming. That & passerby traders won't have the same clientale as the village in question and thus it would be better for them to set up a vendor stand & with proper security or just plain ol' a lot of people around generally the steal ratio could quite frankly be reduced a lot.
Basically proper village organization/maintenence=Good trading opprotunities.
Perhaps instead of a currency you would be able to let's say trade for an amount of items or a specific item.
Such as You want to trade 5 tin for 5 copper. So the person with a copper mine would pop on by, stick in five copper and send that through and receive the 5 tin. They could alternatively steal it still, though.
The other thing I think we need is an actual trading interface between individuals. Just dropping stuff on ground for trades(or storing it. XD) isn't very proper. I know you guys will probably laugh at me but I mean a trading interface like Runescape has.
