Docks. For boats, fishing, and ascetics.

Docks, and harbors. Simple enough to grasp.

Wooden docks AKA
"Jetty" "Jetties"

Initial costs

You build them one tile at a time. Minimum size is a 2x2.
Each tile costs 2 planks and 4 wooden blocks. (May adjust for future balance)

For stone harbors, you always have to build in blocks of 2x2, making it slightly faster to piece together.
Each segment costs 15 stone and 15 bricks. (Again, may adjust for future balance). They must also stick out their minimum of 4 times, but since they are already 2x2, they do not require to be widened.

They must be at least three tiles away from shore to be considered 'finished'
Wooden harbors would simple just be very large jetties.
Every 2-3 tiles would have a wooden pole segment piece.

Further Costs

As your wonderful Jetty, or Harbor sticks out from the coast, all these costs only apply to the first 5 tiles of Jetties, and the first two segments (4 tiles from coast) increase! This means going farther from your original building point is more costly, and will cost more materials to build.

BASIC BREAK DOWN:

Hop into your boat
Untie the rope (if boat is tied) ** This rope remains as 'part of' the boat. It does not require you to put it in your inventory
Wait 2-5 seconds
Sail around 'n stuff
Drive back to Jetty
Right click an available post and select 'Tie Boat'
Wait 3.5-6 seconds
Ctrl-Left click out of boat onto Jetty.

** For a stone harbor, rather then tying it to a Jetty post, you'll have those wooden knob things. I have no clue what they're called, but if you understand what I'm staying, that. Every 4 tiles would have this wooden knob bit, as to make room for larger vessels in the future.

OVERLOOK

Advantages of a Wooden Jetty
+ You can't fall of these. Useful if you accidentally bought swimming. No fear of plunking in the water and dying while trying to fish
+ Helpful for reaching out into a river without a boat, get those darn fish
+ You can tie your boat with a rope to a pole segment, preventing immediate theft, perhaps future water currents.
+ If a boat is tied to your Jetty, and the boat is in the claim, "Cutting" the rope and stealing the boat would count as a theft (or/and vandalism) scent. This leaves the scent by the post where the Jetty was tied, not the water.
+ Most Jetties will be cheaper to build then a boat
+ Generally safer then a boat (Future water hazards will be added eventually is my guess)
+ It adds a nice touch to your settlement or village

Disadvantages of a Wooden Jetty
- Faster decay then a harbor (see Harbors)
- Boats can still be stolen, regardless.
- Time consuming, one tile at a time process
- With future water hazards, the Jetty could get serious damaged, or collapse
- Jetties are limited to how big the river or lake is. They can only span half of it, to prevent bridges and "dams"

** For the half a river span rule, Jetties are ALWAYS allowed to be at least 3 tiles from the coast. Separate Jetties cannot connect up, and must be at least 5 tiles away from each other. You MUST expand a Jetty via right clicking it and setting the direction, or picking from Build -> Structure -> Jetty.. And setting to build next to it.

Advantages of Stone Harbor
+ Much stronger, less decay.
+ Instead of only ropes, you're allow to use chain bounds. Like a rope, it works almost the same. It's attached to the boat permanently, however. It's much more difficult to break. Always leaves a vandalism scent if tampered with.
+ Stronger against future water hazards
+ Not as prone to collapse (HOWEVER, these collapse in segments of 2x2, just as they were built.)
+ Materials are more available and environment friendly
+ Looking kickin' rad.

Disadvantages of Stone Harbor
- Must be build in 2x2. No exceptions
- Posts are further spaced out. This may not appeal to some people
- Bricks take time to make, and the amount of material as the Harbor sticks out from the coast will pile up.
- They are not suitable for small settlements, as they can only span 1/3 of a river.

** Stone harbors are always allowed to be built at least 4 tiles from the coast. As like wooden jetties, two Stone Harbors cannot connect, and must therefore, be build in the same fashion as stated before.

I want a boat trailer. A cart that can hold a boat. Make it need to be pulled by a cow if you really wanna be annoying. but walking with a boat 4 or 5 minimaps to water along a paved road is not fun.

Even If i could put an unloaded boat into a wagon or cart. I know this has been suggested before but I have all this freetime to type while my char crawls for 20 mins. Bah. stupid boats.

Ships & Ports

Postby Randozart » Sun May 16, 2010 1:37 pm

Idea #1 - Ships:
I got an idea to be able to construct some bigger ships (Not huge, just a bit bigger) instead of just boats. You could use these ships to transport animals, straw baskets, chests, crates etc.
It would also be able to transport a complete village or army and of course stuff that you can't transport using crossroads and normal boats.
It would need more materials like: 100 planks, 50 blocks, 5 rope and 10 linen cloth (Or a new object called sail)
This would give great advantages and enable the possibility of hijacking, piracy and overseas trade.
This also brings me to

Idea #2 - Ports:
If you have ships it would also be nice to be able to build a port.
With a port I mean:
- A dock
A dock enables the player to leave their ships somewhere and enables port machinery to be used on the ship

- A Crane
A crane would be the only object to place some big objects like boats, bears and animals on the ship.
A ship has to be docked in order to use a crane on it.

- A walking plank
A carriable object which would allow the player to enter a ship while carrying an object.

- A shipcrafting frame
In order to build a ship, the player would need a shipcrafting frame. It would be an object that is included inthe skill wheelmaking and is the only way to build a ship.

I hope you like my idea...

Pretty funny that I was posting an idea similar to yours when your idea was posted... They pretty much fill each other up

I'm happy people like the idea.

If you have any sort of balancing suggestions, just toss them up. I'm not sure what the multiplier for the extra materials should be after three tiles/four tiles (respectively)

+1, nice idea.

The cost can be upped a bit, so it's something like a challenge and not something just built in a minute.
