Nightvision and Miner's Helm

Postby DatOneGuy » Thu May 20, 2010 7:38 am

The issue:
Considering the fact that Pacho's extended client has nightvision, Miner's helm is widely useless.
For those without full industry this allows you to use a cylinder hat to get to 5 industry (I don't think you can actually go to 6, but I have no idea on this).

This actually (unintended I'm guessing) allows those who use 'cheats' to prosper more than those who play with the regular client (and would have to use miner's helmet, thus losing that buff).

The solution:
Give an incentive for using the Miner's Helm instead of using other hats while mining. It's pretty much useless now to anyone smart enough to use the forum.

The alternative is of course to properly model LoS within a mine and only sent the client data for lit squares

I'd actually like that, but I'm guessing it would take up too many resources...

sending less map data constantly to the player = more resources 8-)

"Constantly" being the key word in your sentence. having to determine line of sight as the player moves around and changing it regularly depending on where is lit.

The problem really is having to check LoS for 300 players at a time.

I'm not sure it'll be a problem, but if it is it would be a draw back.

Really just any incentive for this. Someone asked me earlier if candles were worth anything and he was planning on mass producing them for miner's helms, realistically I doubt they'll be sold much since any city with a farmer will have a ton, however it'll give wax an actual purpose, right now I just let it go unharvested because there's no real point.

A client could still cache every tile received, so it wouldn't matter much, I'd say.
LoS for objects, such as players and trolls, on the other hand; that would make a difference.

The server could refuse to accept clicks on tiles that are not in LoS for move commands, that'd make the hack less useful.

Fog of war style, not too bad

all 300 players are unlikely to be in the mines simultaneously... I don't recommend using the same model for indoors and outdoors.

I leave lighting effects on outside, as I like the aesthetic. Additionally the blue night isn't really a problem for seeing in.
I use torches rather than candle holders though, candles strike me as inside toys.
Maybe we could get them throwing different colored lights?

Trolls in mines would make mining a bit hard, wouldn't it?

I think having objects (like carts, chests ore) not being propageated by the server if not lit (by torches candelabers or miners helmet) would be enough to give an instant demand for candles and torches.

Might be that quite some will hate me for this, but i think it would be a good fix (and should hopefull be relatively easy to implement).
