Some sort of 'place' command...

Postby springyb » Mon May 24, 2010 12:05 am

After failing to properly align carpet 2,332,498,902 times, I feel like there should be some sort of command that lets you drop objects you're carrying with the same placing function that's used when you're choosing a place to build something. It would make it a lot easier to align and decorate.

If you're talking about what I think you are, Shift+clicking should do the trick. (It aligns to grid)

No, I know about that. I want something that makes it easier to line up things off the grid. When you choose something to build, you can hold shift and disable the grid snapping which lets you place it anywhere and line things up nicely since you have a visual to go with it. I'm suggesting the same type of command be added that lets you drop objects you're carrying in the same way.

If you need an example, try arranging urns by building them one at a time where you want them, and then try to make the same pattern by dropping already built urns into the right place.

What you can do is select the item you want to put down from the build menu again. it will give you the item under your cursor, and you can use shift to line it up with the rest of your objects as though you were going to build it. Instead, though, when you have the cursor where you want it, you right click without moving the mouse to cancel building, let up on shift, then right click that exact spot. It'll line up to the smaller grid just like you want it to.

It's a workaround but it helps me line up my herb tables. It also doesn't allow you to line up runestones, boulders, querns, and things that mysteriously never show anything but their shadow when you try to place them.

Someone once suggested that the game should show a semi-transparent shadow of where the thing will land when put back down. Go revive that plx.
Come back two hours earlier.

I don't think transparency is at all necessary, just activate 'placement mode' (Ctrl-P) which available only when something is carried, the item appears on your cursor and you position it with a high degree of granularity, if you move the cursor to an invalid spot the image reds out as if it was heavy decay. Left click to confirm and you walk over and drop the item, simple as that, no new graphics necessary.

Ctrl + L also works pretty well for lining things up
