Cartography and prospecting-- A wonderful combination?

Postby Vivicus » Tue May 25, 2010 5:18 am

Okay, here's the idea:

Cartography, as it stands, only allows for showing the map itself. What if, upon using prospecting while having a map in your inventory, the map itself became marked with your prospecting results? I realize this might be retardedly intensive, but it would help us out on the fringes of civilization find mines easier-- which seems to be a common complaint.

I believe something very similar to this has been suggested before.

I liked it then and I like it now.

Even simply showing the radius on the map would be great. -Seconds this notion- *No wait, thirds*...

Yeah, I suggested having cartography do a geological survey of quality points.

Would be more interesting if you were able to do it manually IMO.. Maybe adding small marked points on the map that you could assign a message to. When you hover your mouse over it, it would show the message.
Also, something equivalent of the mspaint line tool to add borders, or circle in important places so they are easy to spot.

While you're at it, why not change the writing and parchment think to a small ingame application where you could draw stuff, either with a mouse or a tablet. Then i could draw shit and leave it around for fun.
I'm dreaming. but selling ingame drawings for ingame items would be totally cool. :>

5 minutes after being added, every piece of parchment in the game will have a penis on it :|

Saving all those map images is already enough for the poor server to handle, adding the ability to draw and saving them in realtime, are you mad?

I know I'd personally just steal maps and draw penises on them, it would be even more hilarious if there's no eraser tool.

Well, see, this wouldn't even necessarily have to be any sort of capability to draw, and in thinking about it may not be as hard to implement as I originally thought. Since obviously the server already stores all of the data necessary for it (For instance, 2% iron in prospecting results-- obviously it knows where the points are and how far you are from them from when it calls), the only real limiting factor would be how to represent it on your map. You could probably have blue circles representing prospected areas, with it being gradiated to another color (say, red) in the overlay. The real issue would be showing us the overlay without showing us "too much". Then again, I am not the creators so I can't exactly say what's hard and what's not.

I'd really love to see this implemented, as otherwise I'm going to go insane, print out all of my regional and local maps, tack them to my wall, and narrow down prospecting that way. And I really don't need my fiancee to wonder why I've turned the office wall into a rasterized supergrid map.

I want to keep the discussion going here. Any ideas to further this along? Any issues that you can think of with the idea?
