Academy / buff for offline activities

Postby Thurrok » Fri May 28, 2010 4:39 pm

At this time, the only offline activity H&H has for characters is sleeping. While this is useful for lowlevel or nomad characters without alcohol, it does lose its appeal quickly after getting access to beer or wine. The last time I remember sending a character sleeping was when I accidentally sent him off without getting drunk beforehand.

What I am thinking is that at the current time, there is a lack of offline activities. No, I'm not thinking about turning H&H into Farmville or any other browser game, just giving players who have to leave the game for a few days the opportunity not to lose all their advantage to those who kept on macr- ah, ofcourse I mean grinding lp during his absence.

Think about academies or training halls - huge buildings with high building costs and quick decay, therefore alot of maintenance needed. Only bigger settlements could afford running one, demand payments of their non-village trainees or whatever. Sending a character to such an institution would give:

  • some lp gain per hour * dominant stat
  • -1% of current academy lp gain every hour (Tiredness, nullify this effect by sleeping, 1 RL hours's sleep = +10%)
  • -5% FEP gain * hours trained (Academic Nausea, decreases only while spending in-game time, as with personal beliefs)
  • -5% to all attributes * hours trained (Tiredness #2, only way to get rid of it is ...SLEEPING !) (EDIT: Doesn't really make sense since you'd have to sleep a day after a longer training session to regain stats, which is stupid)

There could also be lp/food mods at the academy (chars gotta eat after all) and probably a thousand ways to exploit this for even MOAR STATS, but that's the point of H&H, isn't it?

Anyway, share your thoughts...

I entered this thread thinking it would be a typical bad idea (offline activities USUALLY are), but this sounds pretty good actually. As long as it's nerfed where constant use is bad and the only time you should use it is actually when you can't play (useless otherwise) it seems great.

After rethinking "Tiredness" it really doesn't make sense now, but there has to be a limiter on for how long you can keep that character at the academy without it turning into an exploit. Maybe it would be a better debuff if there was a -1% of current lp gained per hour. That way, if the character has been at the academy for several days, he'll get less lp than a newcomer, but still more than if he was sitting around in the wilderness somewhere.

BTW, a bit offtopic, but...

JOFTAR FIXED THE BUILDING EXPLOIT!!! (At last.)

I love this idea. However, the LP gain reduction should go away at the same rate it increased. That way you can't just log in ever couple hours, take your char out of academy, then put him back in to nix the reduction. There should also be several versions:

Book: Gives extremely minor LP, used up after 6 hours of study (just enough for a 9-5 workday).

Library: Made by putting ten or more books on a shelf, gives minor LP but gives more the more books you have.

Shrine: Makes offline time count towards personal beliefs, requires a point of numen every three days to work. (Not sure about this one.)

Meadhall: Like a giant trough, you put food and and hungry people in, you get FEPs out, requires village authority to function.

Academy: Gives moderate LP to students, costs lots of auth.

Mentor: If you have the Mentir skill you can choose to mentor someone with less LP than you. This logs both of you out and gives the person you're mentoring plenty of LP.
