Give noobs the monkey response?

Postby Jubal » Sat Jun 12, 2010 12:33 pm

Basically, as a new player I love this game to bits. My main issue has been that hwen I was at my feeblest I lost most of my HP. I've been attacked by bears twice and boars nasty, nasty numbers of times. I'm thus on 15 HHP right now, which means that although I'm now able to survive fine I'm in a LOT of danger should anything attack me. All because I was too weak as a noob. And tbh if this account dies it's unlikely I'll bother making another one, because I've put quite a bit into this guy now and due to being relatively high change I'd lose prolly most of that.

So my idea is this; allow players with below a certain cumulative total of LP to do the one really, really natural thing when confronted by dangerous beasts; climb trees. There's some game fluff telling us that the newbs are "young" hearthlings, so it does make quite a bit of sense. This would greatly improve things for future newbs and allow them to end up facing the world with more HHP than a half-squashed leech. The skill could possibly be bought back at high levels, too, just for the fun of it. (Adding climbing cliffs as a possibiliy for the bought version might also make it a pretty cool skill to have).

Clearly it'd be difficult to work out where the threshold should be, and I guess it might damage the "survival" apsect of the early game (though it could be not 100% reliable, and the chance of falling down in front of an angry boar might make it more of a desperate gamble than a surefire escape route).

Defeats the entire point of playing a survival game if you can just instantly hide in the trees.

Best way to solve your problems is to walk along rivers or lakes. This means that any time you get attacked by anything, you can just run into the shallows and avoid getting mauled.

When I first started out I kept getting mauled by boars and bears, but character after character the game got a whole lot easier!

Also, jorb and loftar have planned to implement climbing into trees, but not to escape boars and bears, but to gather parrot eggs and get DEM NUTZ! :D

Seriously though, nuts!
I like apple juice.

I ate two rats. I didn't even lose anything at the FEP upgrade either, because I'd eaten so many rabbits that I gained agility. All my HHP loss has been boars and bears, basically.

I didn't say instantly or automatically, did I?

This is the confusing bit... because of course actually a bear would happily chase another animal into the water, or a boar. The forests have always been safer places for man than the plains in the early human history of the earthlands.

Be happy that you still can stick MOBs to shorlines, else you would see the birds way more often.

Early game wilderness survival is one of the most challenging parts of the game imo...decisions such as "do I risk pissing off that boar to dig up that blueberry to get me out of red hunger?" We've all been there, we've all done it. Find yourself some leeches and suck it up (hardy har har), it will make you a better player in the long run :)

And tbh if this account dies it's unlikely I'll bother making another one, because I've put quite a bit into this guy now and due to being relatively high change I'd lose prolly most of that.

Lol...if that happens you'll be back anyways, you know it and so does everyone else
