Make scents last longer

Well, as it turns out theft scents last for 32 hours. At the same time nobody is able to break a simple palisade with his bare hands anymore, but it takes 24 hours for a ram to dry. This is a pretty small time frame if you don't get scents right away, track them and build the ram without any interruption. I suggest to make at least theft scents last a little longer so people who don't log in that regularly still have a decent chance of tracking down someone who stole from them. Add another 16 hours or so to give everyone a fair chance to retaliate against crimes.

It should really be 3-4 RL days and not 4 ingame days

Individual scent durations are based on severity; Murder stays longer than Battery, both stay longer than Assault. As there are items of majorly differing worth, theft scents should work in their own mechanic; stealing somebody's Dragon Helm is a far greater crime than stealing somebody's Spindly Taproot, and the scent duration should reflect that. (Not sure if the devs have given items actual values to determine scent duration, especially with quality as an additional factor).

'Til then, theft scents should probably last upwards of two RL days to make up for tracking and ram construction/drying/use (considering it's likely to be a vain effort regardless).

i agree with the op, also it might be nice if different scents of the same type from the same perpetrator somehow stacked or something to increase the duration they all last (after they've been picked up i mean), maybe +1 in game hour per scent, so leaving a lot more scents leaves you vulnerable for a longer time.

+1 to longer theft scent durations, -1 to duration based on value. One of the core elements of the H&H economy is that only the player's decide what anything is worth, and it should stay that way.

This. Who knows. Maybe that Q10 straw hat was the one I spawned with and was very sentimental. It should be my prerogative to go on a bloody spree if I value it as much as you do your dragon helm and pearls.

Seriously, +1
They should last at a minimum 3 IRL days. That gives you at most 1 1/2 days or so to find the scents, track the perp, and put up a ram.

I talked about this in another thread (Read my post).
To summarize what I was saying:

If I decided I was going to steal today. I could enter somebody's claim and open a wardrobe. There would be a piece of Q4 leather and a dragon's helm.
Since the situation is; no matter what I take I will still leave a theft scent. Then I might as well take all that I can.

But if scent duration or scent punishment was based on item value, then I might decide to take the piece of leather and leave the hard earned dragon's helm alone.

For all you know that piece of leather is far more valuable to that person. It could have been the only piece of leather they made, the first they made, a piece that a friend who quit (or died) made and left them.

These might be pixels but you should not judge the value of something to someone else. I keep a Toad around all the time, I've given him a name and while I wouldn't care if you stole all my other shit I'd be thoroughly pissed if you stole my toad. In fact it's probably one of the very few cases where I'd bother to actually track someone down and attempt to kill them.
