I find that while I’m processing a lot of goods that I end up with spare components that I don’t really want or need. What to do with those things? Horde them in cupboards in case they might be used someday to take up masses of storage space? Drop them on the ground and hope the magical decay fairies take them away sometime soon? I suggest that there could be a building that is a Compost Bin that is specifically designed to destroy items without the delay of waiting for decay. This would help people to keep their claims tidy, immediately remove unwanted items from the game world without the need for additional processing during the decay cycle, and make spring cleaning all the extra stuff that’s laying around in your cupboards easier.
I suggest that the Compost Bin be a buildable, but not liftable, building that has two ways to operate. First, you steal the interface for liftables from a boat and whenever you have a liftable above your head and you right click the Compost Bin you get a space like a boat to drop it in to destroy it. Second, you steal the inventory interface from a kiln that has enough space for a max character inventory, and instead of the ‘light’ button you have a ‘compost’ button that will destroy anything in the building’s storage when pressed. If a person mistakenly destroying items that they don’t mean to is a concern, there could be a second button added so you have to ‘close lid’ then ‘compost’ as a second check to make sure that the user truly meant to eliminate those items. Additionally, to prevent people from using the compost bin as storage it automatically destroys any items after being stored in the hopper for 5 minutes regardless of button use.
This suggestion has obvious potential for greifing. If someone was to break into your claim they could just take all your stuff and put it all in the compost bin. However, this is the same as if they were to dump all of your things in the river, just a bit faster. I also suggest that the lid be toggle lockable with a possible graphic denotation on the building itself to show the locked or unlocked state. The lock will cause any potential raiders to only be able to destroy it outright if you were to keep it locked, and that would negate the possibility of the Compost Bin being used to rapidly destroy a claim.
I gave some thought to the building possibly giving back some kind of item for throwing things in to be composted, but there are really only two possibilities, as I see it, for some kind of return item. Either the item is useless, and that would go contrary to the point of the building to get rid of unwanted items. Or the item is useful, in which case people would simply farm the most easily generated crap to drop into the hopper solely to get the post process item. So, I would recommend that this building return nothing at all, it is simply to destroy unwanted objects.
If there are plans in the works to make a compost bin for decaying plant matter into fertilizer or the composting concept would like to be reserved for later use, this suggestion could also be styled as a junk pit, garbage dump, or oubliette as additional examples.
