Free Range Chickens

Postby Peren » Wed Jun 30, 2010 2:23 am

Everyone knows free range chickens are better than battery chickens. They taste better.
In H&H we keep chickens locked up in a coop and feed them seeds. We can't even feed them earth worms!

I propose a new type of fence: 'Chicken Proof Fence' that these animals cannot pass through.
Using this fence, players could build an enclosure around a coop. Chickens placed in the coop or simply dropped in the enclosure would lay eggs in the coop.

Quality of chickens (and eggs) would increase at a rate affected by:
  • the area of the enclosure (up to a cap of 5 tiles per chicken)
  • the quality of the soil
  • the type(s) of tiles in the enclosure with forest being the best.

Or not? Just an idea.

I like this, but maybe at night the chickens go inside the coop to sleep and then go outside when it's day?
I like apple juice.

Cool idea! I like it. Riou is right, trough. also, i think heath or grasslands would be better for the chickens than forest terrain.

This would require a way to distinguish chickens from player-owned (tamed) chickens; the reason that cows remain after a server restart is that they're permanent, unlike aurochs. Chickens would need a permanent version that wouldn't get lost on restart/crash, meaning more to save on shutdown and more to load on startup.

I think this is a great idea! Also the eggs could be laid randomly within the enclosure and it is up to the farmer to find them.

Surely the only reason why chickens and rabbits can currently run through walls and fences is just that collision events are missing in the code?
