A list of things you need to deal with

Postby lenton » Sun Jul 18, 2010 11:15 pm

- The website is very slow for some reason, every page takes like 20 seconds to load for me.
- The website layout is terrible. Add some CSS to the website and some more graphics.
- When you start off a pop up window tell you that it is right click to speak would help out beginners.
- A tutorial on character creation would also be a fantastic idea.
- Movement is very buggy and you need to make it completely smooth.
- When the user clicks a location the character should make a path around blocked objects.
- You should be able to click on the map to move long distances.
- You should make the window bigger in size and make the menu at the bottom static (so it can't be minimised).
- It also takes too long to close windows. You need to make it instantly close.

Our server is run from my student dorm. It's completely overloaded. We're investigating alternatives.

'Add some CSS'? The website already uses CSS. More graphics != Better layout

- When you start off a pop up window tell you that it is right click to speak would help out beginners.

Auxiliary features that are very low on our list of priorities. I agree, of course, that tutorials and other such bling might be worth considering, but this game is... well... not finished yet.

- Movement is very buggy and you need to make it completely smooth.

Again, server is overloaded.

- When the user clicks a location the character should make a path around blocked objects.

Would be nice, indeed.

- You should be able to click on the map to move long distances.

Yeahumaybe. Depends on what you mean.

- You should make the window bigger in size and make the menu at the bottom static (so it can't be minimised).

I agree that we should support higher resolutions (I use Pacho's client myself). The main UI must *obviously* be possible to get rid off.

- It also takes too long to close windows. You need to make it instantly close.

Again, server is overloaded.

... oh, and welcome! :)

Or come back in say... 2 years? Chances are the project got dropped or it evolved by that time.

Quick note on that one, it's totally possible to have the client be aware of how a close button works and not wait for the server to acknowledge the click.
IMO the server shouldn't even be aware that there is a window on the client.

I know though, loftar doesn't want to do it because he reckons it means more UI work. (not true, but that's a long argument)

Similar deal here, movement could be made smoother using client prediction without caring about server overload...
A tougher problem than the UI but still plenty solved by others.

I don't mean to imply that these should be priorities or anything, just pointing out that the server load shouldn't really be regarded as a show stopper for these things, if you start looking at how to get really high volume on minimal hardware, reducing the impact of the lag is one of the cheapest ways to address it.

I can think of an exception; containers. How else will the server and other players know a container is in use, therefore unliftable?

@ Trav: Something wrong with the movement interpolation that the client already has? Also, what purpose would it actually serve if the UI was less server dependent? The UI not responding is a good sign the server is not communicating, and I like to know when that happens. Idk. It's more loftar's thing than mine, obviously.

The server needs to know there is a container and it needs to know the container is being lifted or opened. These things however are not ui specific. The server does not need to know that the player has a window open on his screen with some icons and buttons on it as a way of displaying contents.

The server shouldn't care if it is a window or a list or some crazy 3d cube monstrosity.

The inventory Tetris mechanic complicates that but the principle still applies
