This server is considered the official haven discord,

This is no more an "official" server any more than the RoB wiki is an "official" wiki. It is ran by players, specifically the group "Hedgehugs," not by Seatribe.

Other than that, the few times I've stuck my nose in there, it's been a pretty active, fairly well maintained server. I have heard tales of harassment and other problems with some of the Discord chats, though, so you can't say it's a completely wrong premise.

I think it's safe to describe both the wiki and the discord as "official unofficial." There are surely tales of harassment in every online community out there.

I joined shubla's server when he first spammed the links in the main discord the other day and was immediately harassed by him.

I would hardly say that harassment is an indicator of good or bad moderation, it's practically an integral part of the human social experience.

The only hafen community Discord server I have joined which was more toxic than the evolved hedgehugs server is alecks server.

there has never been a single instance of toxicity in the server I manage, it a veritable safe space. I would never tolerate bullying or harassment. You must be mistaken.

If your understanding of moderation is removing messages with gore and porn, then yes.
But moderation of a community should be much more. At least things mentioned in here. https://discord.com/guidelines Which some, are not enforced in the current "de facto" server.

Yes, but being moderator of the forums here, I get a LOT of messages from a lot of different people with complaints asking what we can do.

Then, why don't you ask server creators to follow guidelines, but creating a bare new server instead?

Why bother with that? Some of the server admins have already proven to be untrustworthy. We had issues with some of the people that would be in the IRC channel and ended up with mod status due to the way IRC channel rules work. If people want to make a communication channel for Haven, they can. If you want to visit, visit. If you don't, don't. Don't have a bad attitude because someone doesn't want to deal with someone else's BS.

For what it's worth... doesn't Discord shut down servers that can't meet their "minimum guidelines" or however it is they put it? Or am I just getting their TOS mixed in my head with other apps' TOS?

I believe the devs are already spending enough of their precious time moderating the forums. The last thing I would want to see is even more development time taken up by moderating a Discord channel. I feel like it would come down to either the forums or a Discord. I prefer the forums. It allows for people to be more thoughtful with their presence (though it rarely seems to work out that way).

It must also be a convenient way of allowing freedom of expression within the community without being held unnecessarily personally accountable.
