I am not too keen on the idea of a big village, a few companions are what would make the game much better than that.

Any village is unique, there is something unique wherever you go. I wish you luck with that project but a rag-tag mix of strangers won't last long, sooner or later people will start leaving to join friends in different villages or just quit the game.
