Do all the big villages just attack people to get what they want, or is there a point where they'll leave you alone? I'm guessing a lot of small villages would be much more interested in mutual economic benefit than having their home destroyed.

we do not attack random people! everyone we remove from this game has done wrong to another hearthling be it murder or simply theft......criminals pay for the actions we avenge the innocents

Ofcourse not, what are you, stupid? They attack just 'cause. No village is considered "big" if there's people nearby who have what the village "wants" and the people that have it are still alive!

It is only AD + Amishes that are attacking hearthlings atm. They have participated raids against peaceful people multiple times, demanding tokens in exchange. The best example is stya's village, that has been partially sieged due to their flaws in defense and AD members were demanding 10 tokens to be leave the village alone. They have also demanded 4 tokens from SIberia as well (but their siege have failed). This is what I have seen with my own eyes, whereas there have been multiple reports of people paying tokens/rmt. AD were also noted for getting insiders into villages, such as Niflheim viewtopic.php?f=54&t=49624
The only way to be left alone is to secure your village, so it will be costy and time-consuming for the raiders. Here is the information on the basics of the siege defense: http://pastebin.com/dUUpih7z

Glossary:
-Amish Paradise is a big russian-speaking village on south-west, currently getting inactive. They have helped AD to revive after they have been stomped in the beginning and the middle of the world. They have also been purging villages all around their place + the north, where AD's vault is based. Amishes were allied to Wizards/Oddittown (currently inactive). But that alliance has dissolved, since they've allied to AD (rival faction to Wizards).

-Stya is a trader, that has created a trading hub and got positive responses for the nooby population viewtopic.php?f=55&t=48762. My faction (Dis+allies) had to help them due to mutual friends.

- Niflheim used to be a village in the north that has attempted to keep the local noobs safe and help them out. My faction had to resolve some disputes with them in regards purging nearby noobs by one of our friends' village. AD have been attempting to recruit them, then turned hostile once they have accepted members of Polska Crev. AD have decided to in penetrate spies and destroy the village that way, instead of fighting on even grounds or attempting to siege the place.
