I steal whatever is useful to me. That's just how the game works. If they didn't learn it before, they'll learn it the hard way.
When I first started out, the group I played with also had a newbie village we spent like two weeks on. Then raiders came and stole everything. It taught us how defending your stuff is an essential part of H&H and we moved on, to a different location where we did everything better.

just go shoot a boar. takes like 15 seconds and you have a lot more hide/bones/strength food.

I don't steal hides. But I did recently steal a whole bunch of fish. Fishing is easy, but it takes time and I don't have a lot of that. I also steal other more complicated resources like leather.

that i can sorta understand, but newbie settlements usually don't have much useful stuff to advanced players/villages (at least mine don't :p). i kinda feel sorry for the people who have to steal rats and junk.

Everything is useful. Shitty quality string can be used for rope. Shitty quality hides can be used for shitty quality string. Rats are good Hunger food for digging alts. EVERYTHING HAS A USE
