Everything is useful. Shitty quality string can be used for rope. Shitty quality hides can be used for shitty quality string. Rats are good Hunger food for digging alts. EVERYTHING HAS A USE

I personally find it more useful to help those people develop themselves then later trade with them for stuff I don't have the time to make or to spiral myself.

I don't steal hides. But I did recently steal a whole bunch of fish. Fishing is easy, but it takes time and I don't have a lot of that. I also steal other more complicated resources like leather.

that i can sorta understand, but newbie settlements usually don't have much useful stuff to advanced players/villages (at least mine don't :p). i kinda feel sorry for the people who have to steal rats and junk.

Rats are not junk. As pointed out before, they're the best Energy food currently in the game. When you do a lot of mining, building or digging, rats are very useful to replenish energy without ruining your Hunger, especially if you don't have good food yet. Also, they're good food for the variety bonus and a rare source of Psyche FEPs.

I haven't done it before for lack of rats, but if I find q10+ rats in an unclaimed newbie camp I will steal them. I eat them much faster than I can catch them.

Get an alt, do 20 discoveries, buy fishing, give him double nettle pants and shirts, afk fishing. Much faster than looking for nubs to steal from

I don't think anyone goes looking for newb camps to raid. I think it's more they stumble across them and then browse for anything useful. If they have better than what I'm carrying, I'll take what I want. I usually leave something of some use behind, but not always. I think it was world 6 I hadn't settled yet and got a pair of bunny slippers by taking the dried hides on racks and putting the fresh ones on. More than likely the hides dried before the guy logged back on again.

I'll tell you what's really fun is taking the seeds a guy hasn't planted and putting fresh WWW up. He thinks the area he covered didn't have what he was looking for when it actually did

Sometimes I drop stuff from crates and bash unclaimed houses just because.
At some point people will learn, I guess.
