Is there any way you could perhaps add a special type of pavement that can be placed near water but can't have anything built on it?

The only issue that I see from this update is that it screws things up aesthetically (such as "docks" for boats, etc)

Jorb, let us pave the Riverside with Wooden boards, so it makes it look like a real docks, of course no walls may be build on a wooden pavement. ^_^

Hearth vaults, are they like 100 HF's in a circle without hole?

A hearth vault is an island fortress that is impossible to siege containing a hearthfire. The reason it is impossible to siege is the walls are built right on the waters edge, preventing rams.
