I just had a similar experience myself, actually. It still seems a bit weird, but I made sure to lower it a lot to keep the RNG from playing too bad tricks through thorns.

I would guess that was the case, seeing as characters have died (as in reincarnate dead) from thorns.

More people have died from bugs than in the 1st world.
