It's a common business practice among MMO developers to advertise games as free play and offer its players to subscribe to the 'member's only' features or expansion pack. Such a popular game that employs this tactic is Runescape.
Another common tactic involves what is called the cash shop. i.e. You must purchase certain items or special effects. Say you were playing a game where you had to manage your kingdom. There is an item that is mandatory in order to keep your workers building your castle. However you are only given a few of these items and you quickly run out. Then a popup comes up suggesting that you may purchase said item in the cash shop. Even though the game is 'free', you're going to be pretty damn tempted to purchase those items with real life cash if you're serious about playing.
Basically it boils down to the fact that you have to spend real life cash if you want to actually get anywhere, which is pretty lame.
