I totally meant to say this last night but I was plum tuckered out, so to speak. Of course jorb has since posted that there's gonna be more artsy crap like this, so sweet.

I forgot to take any screenshots while we were feasting, but I have to concur with jackard that even four guys around a small table doesn't look much like a 'feast'.

Indeed -- that's a good idea anyway, since it is the hunger modifiers from the individual tables that are summed up by the bonfire as well. The more tables being feasted at, the greater the bonus.

So hang on...

There's a bonus for:
having awesome gear at the table, set by a guy with good psych,
having a fire and having one guy with good Charisma light the fire
having lots of tables near the fire.

Is there any bonus for having lots of people feasting at once?
Does the feast involve sharing food at all, or is it just eat from your backpack?

Not at all. It is not "tables by the bonfire" that count, but "tables being feasted at by the bonfire" -- that is, tables that people are actively eating from (or, more precisely, having their feasting UI open).

In other words, you get a greater bonus by having five people feast at five tables than for five people feasting at one table, but there's no way to get a bonus for six tables with only five people feasting.

So, I build 5 tables, fill each up with food, but one of our feastmates are absent, no bonus for us?

Well, you get the bonus for the other four.

I might have missed this earlier, but do tables only take 1 hit from decay and are killed when left outside?

Is there anything to discourage the thousand alts of eternal starving table sitting?
