Right now, the server is out of memory again. It wants about 1.4 GB of RAM, but has been swapped out to less than 800 MBs RSS. Probably by Apache, but I'm not entirely sure anymore. It just seems so unreasonable that Apache would be using more than 1 GB (the server has 2 GB of physical RAM right now).

Let me reassure you. There are only a few degenerated idiots in this game that like to make it look like 'everybody' is blaming the big crowd of Russians, that have recently joined, for the lag that has been plagueing us for the past weeks. I am quite sure, the majority of the people playing this game know perfectly well that you, as a group, cannot be blamed for that. People of whatever nationality have equal rights to play this game. This includes Russians. The current lag only shows that there is something amiss with the server, be it bandwidth (DONATE!), RAM (DONATE!), motherboard (DONATE!), bugged software (DONATE!) or inefficient coding (STILL, DONATE!).

I hope you understand this, and do not make a habit of generalizing, as you did in your above statement, for this does most people in this game wrong, who have absolutely nothing against Russians.

Friendly regards, martinuzz

No, we're just waiting for the additional RAM that we've ordered to arrive. As for "why", it is because we're reusing an old desktop computer which came with 1GB of RAM and the upgrade we've already given was at the expense of Jorb's desktop computer.

It should be said, though, that we tried to take another 2GB RAM stick from Jorb's desktop computer and put it into the server this last Friday, and it didn't work (the firmware only detected ~600 MB additional RAM, and the kernel panicked on boot). I suspect that the motherboard may be broken somehow, so there is a risk that we'll have to order a new mobo as well to fix the RAM shortage.

No particular extra donations should have to be made to upgrade the server; we've just paid for the RAM with donations (thanks everyone, again), and if we need a motherboard, we still have enough left to pay for it. It's just a matter of waiting time.

The Internet connection is a different matter, however. I think Jorb has still to remember to call his ISP and ask if it can be upgraded, but it seems dubious that that will be possible, in which case we don't really know what to do. There is the option of colocation of the server in a place with a better connection, but that seems to cost... a lot. $100/month is the least we've been able to find.

WEll.. With 200+ players online at the same time nowadays, a mere 50 cents per person would do the trick for that. $100 per month shouldn't be too hard to obtain, right? Current lag is really frustrating, I'd say, if upgrading internet connection would fix it, do it!

EDIT: I might be overly optimistic, but I'm used to seeing the donation figures for DF.
