No, cause games like Diablo have never had permadeath.... D3 is going to about as close to "MMO" as you get (so far). Hardcore in the first two were pretty popular, too.

Make death inevitable, and instead of a few, mostly similar endgames, have many diverse ones that are relatively easy to reach.

Oh man, I sure how we get to mostly kill 3 week+ old characters. Killing/Losing 2 day old alts/newbies is boring.

I was thinking the world could be the main focus of development instead of the character. Pushing forward the frontier, evacuating from areas of natural disaster/deplenished resources, that sort of thing. And anyway each 3 day old character would be different, due to a wide skilltree rather than a deep one.

But I'm just idea-wanking so nevermind.

I've been thinking on sort of the same thing for a while. I'm just not sure where to start.

Like that idea, my version of this is that recources are finitive and if the are deplete a volcano erupts or a flood starts, rendering that area useless for some time, and when the magma cools and the water is gone, the landscape would be different and have new/different resources

Ok, then a giant lobster rises out of the sea and destroys everything.

Maybe it could be done by earthquakes, and people wishing to save their towns would have to rush to amass sheep bladders to stop it.

Nice game!
and are the graphics going to be in complete 3d?
So will there be 3d elevation too so that we say bye bye to 2d cliffs...
No trees were killed by this post, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
