It just seems like blind love for the game, but perhaps because im new i just cant understand.

It does seem to make sense that this is a game that was originally a hobby and made with blood, sweat and tears (also with a lot of love) so it might be a very long time before it dies, there is also development not from the original creators(mods).

EDIT- ye sorry i can see how that may be confusing,
......there is also development from modders but not so much from the original creators.....

Mods don't develop anything. We sit on the forum being useless. Both games are made with blood, sweat and tears -- at times it is difficult to tell which is the primary component.

It's not because you're new, but because you have failed to read what has already been posted, especially the things that have been posted by those that work on the game: Jorb and loftar. Read up, understand who has developed these games, and what their intentions are.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

No, just the fact that you can spend a lot of time in the game. The hill building itself didn't take twelve hours, it was just the big thing to come out of that gaming session. I also replanted fields and blablabla.

It is nigh on trivial to do now that you can drop soil to level, though.

Terraforming has to be "expensive" or I'll have a wilderness that looks like a plate of Swiss cheese within a fortnight.
