The portrait could be made with vectors à la Haven 1.0 instead of a 3d portrait. It would be nice to have a way to personalize characteristics like beard, eyes, nose, etc.
Too legit to quit.

It could, but one of the very nice things with doing it this way is that we don't have to maintain a dual resource hierarchy for ingame vs. portrait appearance. ;)

Even then, I'm considering changes that would allow face customization as it is.

It is important to note that 3D is mainly used for drawing and that the server is still pretty much 2D only, except for having a height map. That said, however, the potential changes I mentioned on page 10 could possibly also be used to provide for more freedom in building as well. I must reiterate, however, that I cannot predict whether those changes will actually come to pass, since I haven't figured them out completely yet.

Whats the deal with cliffs. They look nice in the screenshot, but in my brief experience with Salem, the hills were on of the most obnoxious things I had to deal with. Terra-forming them seemed like another pointless time-sink without much redeeming gameplay quality. Anything different in mind for hafen? I mean, its not like the current cliffs in haven are much better, but can always hope for something better .

Question

Can you give us some idea of how you envision the game to work as compared to current Haven? Some kind of updated manifesto or something would be appreciated.

What I really want to know is, are you hoping to make a game that basically functions like the current one, but prettier, with some problems ironed out and a few new features, or does Haven 1.0 represent in gameplay terms still a half-developed phaze of something that might end up looking quite different?

Opinion

I think the fundamentals of Haven are pretty awesome, in terms of starting with absolute freedom (no safety zones etc.) and allowing the human beings to make the world into what they want it to be, rather than the game forcing something onto them that is too specific. But political/urban development of a post-village level would be nice to see. What I want really, are new mechanics that relatively seamlessly fit on top of the existing basic idea of sandbox freedom. So, human beings make an empire, which could generate cities, areas of relative stability and safety for noobs to noob it up, taxation, law enforcement etc. Yet that same empire could crumble, break up, be ripped apart by war, and return to woodland.

If then then I hope you at least succeed in making night time look good instead of just eye-straining.

If objects were only sent to the client on bases of line of sight it would not only make combat near impossible for people with lower ping but just plain frustrating and a complete nightmare for anyone outside of Europe.

Although it would be a great thing to have unknown dots show up on map before they got close enough to show up in visual sight and have the distance altered based on night/day or stealth vs tracking.

Make the character models a little taller=perfection. I'm also digging the non-cartoony avatar.

Damn that looks awesome. Looking forward to becoming a dedicated Haven player again (provided the gameplay improvements are as improved as the graphics seem to be;)
