Well, to be fair, that was, to a very large extent, an experiment in what impact it would have on performance. So far, the impact has (as I expected) been almost nil. The server only keeps the part of the map that is actually visited in core, so it depends more on the number of players than the amount of map that exists.

If you mean that it would somehow make Apache perform worse, then you'd have to explain yourself, because I see no reason why that should happen. :)

For that matter, Apache doesn't just serve the minimaps; it also serves any resources that aren't in the JAR file and, more importantly, the JNLP file and resources for the client.

Loftar:

You should give a try to NGINX, an Apache replacement that performs superb and only eats 1/10th of th resources of Apache, check this out:

WILL work more than ok for the forum, dont know if it will work for the maps, BUT, 1/10th of resources, its very compelling to try. And is easy to configurate (psss, dont tell anybody that it's Russian made :P )

BTW, 2gb of RAM? Are you kidding me? I though you had at least 8 gb. 4 gb of ram is 110 USD:

I know this is Alpha, but Jesus Christ, if I had a project like this i'd gladly put 200 USD of my own pocket to boost me the ram to 8gb and please your players. And dont tell me you guys are from some poor country in Africa that with 200 usd you can buy a house. I just dont get it. I believe this was a mistake and the message i read was wrong.

Anyway, NGINX. http://nginx.org/

I might agree that Apache is not exactly the proverbial shiznit, but it would currently be non-trivial to port the homepage from it (since it's written with mod_python). I'd like to make the homepage not depend on Apache at some point, but it's hard for me to spend the time on that right now.

It would be easier to just move Apache to another machine, which it could well be argued that I should do anyway, whether I'm using Apache or not. It's just not entirely trivial either, seeing how the homepage depends on a couple of things being present in the filesystem that are generated by and/or shared with the game server, such as the minimap, game resources and the server status info (as presented on the front page). Again, it's not that I can't do it; it's just a matter of time, which I'm kinda short on right now.

And no, you didn't read the message about 2 GB of RAM wrong. We just haven't needed more than that before the last few weeks, so there hasn't been any reason to buy any more.

EDIT: About nginx, whyever is it a web server and a mail proxy in the same program? I don't want to be overly critical before having looked at it closer, but that just smells of monolithical uglyness to me.

EDIT: Nevermind. It's all good now.

That's just what I'm going to do...right after the server is up. Which is hopefully any minute now.
