Well, to be fair, that was, to a very large extent, an experiment in what impact it would have on performance. So far, the impact has (as I expected) been almost nil. The server only keeps the part of the map that is actually visited in core, so it depends more on the number of players than the amount of map that exists.
If you mean that it would somehow make Apache perform worse, then you'd have to explain yourself, because I see no reason why that should happen. :)
For that matter, Apache doesn't just serve the minimaps; it also serves any resources that aren't in the JAR file and, more importantly, the JNLP file and resources for the client.
