If I knew what the actual cause of the problem is, I could perhaps answer that. ;)

So which is it?

Either way, you don't have the time to fix it or it's beyond your abilities, so in the meantime I have another suggestion for you.

There are developer resources and game development forums on the web, search for them and make a few posts about your issues.

Hopefully someone will bite with something useful and it will only cost you a few minutes of your time.

I know the intermediate, but not the root, causes. I thought that was obvious from everything I have stated thus far. :)

rest of networking world knows a lot a good ways to do this.
i have researched ways implemented in LotRO and Unreal Engine, but i'm not a teacher.

anyway, fuck udp.
you using udp only because you using linux, because tcp sockets in linux are sucks.
move on, break the ring of sucks. enjoy tcp in windows :)

i mean - spamming packet until peer ack.

If you are implying that there is a better way to handle packet loss than retransmission, then do feel free to educate me and the rest of the networking world. :)

Otherwise, I think you would instead want to elaborate upon the specifics of my retransmission scheme.

You should consider just switching to TCP. Many modern MMOs use TCP for their client/server communication (I know WoW and STO for sure, and I'm sure there are others).

Are you guys implying the problem is solely on the protocol port? xD

What are you implying the advantages would be, really? With UDP, I gain a lot from not having to retransmit obsolete data, and can't say I'm seeing any disadvantages whatever. I haven't ever noticed the actual protocol ever being a problem in any way, really. If you are of a contrary opinion, do feel free to voice concrete problems with the current protocol. :)

To pop your bubble, most MMO's are using both protocols.
But I agree that lofty should get some exercise with TCP and see if problems maybe lies there... I just hope he figures out soon where problem is.

I think it's fine. Using tcp won't help anything and should only be used the way it is currently being used. Maybe some of you guys should learn more about how TCP/UDP work before posting :( Because of a few post here I analyzed what happens during connection and user name and password (TCP) is being used, which it should be. When you play the game it's all UDP, which is what you need for a MMO.
