Indeed, it seems to work fairly well. A bit boring at times, as someone pointed out above, but far better than RoB. And simple boredom you can throw stuff at to make it go away. Still trying to think of a good mechanic for people to actually meet up post wilderness spawns. Beacons, maybe? But why would you light one if it only attracts idiots and griefers? Maybe stronger claim protection is a foundation for more in game trust, but that's probably optimistic. RoB -- do not want.

Anyways, I'm having a fresh start with the game, which is always fun. Just in time for my finals to.

So long, and thanks for the tin, unknown benefactor.

Yeah. I mean... I could just hope that it happens on its own... which in a way would be ideal, but the world is pretty big.

Hmmm. One cool idea might be if you could somehow see smoke rising on the horizon whenever someone lights a fire/kiln/smelter. That would actually be realistic and fun.

At least on clear days when there is little wind.

maybe there could be some kind of compass type item or UI element that you could use to like, have an arrow point toward your hearth fire, or toward semi-distant "signs of civilization", or possibly even memorized locations/landmarks? like i have a favorite fishing spot a bit of a walk from my hearth, i could set a point there, or if there was a village i had visited, or a person i had kinned and had claim permissions, i could memorize that point.

Potentially yeah. That idea has a lot going for it, and I have considered similar ideas before. One problem with it is the question of what the horizon view represents. As it is it just displays a generic landscape, but if it now also is to display dynamic terrain information, then why not other things -- mountains come to mind? You could of course have some sort of Wolfenstein 3desque thing going, but that migh be a bit too 1990. Then again, KISS (not the band) tells me that I should just add in the smoke plume and not think too much about it. Another option is arrows like for the off screen party pointers. Those look ugly and should be fixed anyway.

That might actually be something. That way it would at least be a mutual "I see you, you see me" thing. And people wouldn't have much choice. Maybe a perc/explore roll to see the plumes at a distance. Also, the line "Extinguish all flames!" would be used. Which in itself is cool.

Yeah, I've been wanting to set markers for a long time. It might just be my poor sense of locale, but I get lost out there. But yeah, definitely.

A long distance view for lakes, mountains, meadows, cities, smoke, and nightlights would be pretty sweet. It'd have to be larger than the current one though. Maybe if it was shaped like a rectangle instead of a circle. Put up in the top center like a rearview mirror...
