He's commenting on the blog post. It uses a referral link for the beta signups. If you're the author of that blog post then indeed you're guilty of shameless self promotion. If you're not, then why are you getting so defensive?

It's not a "hoax", it's just a shady (albeit completely legitimate and honestly not really that big of a deal in the long run) way to get people to sign up for the beta underneath you (honestly I have no idea why they even bothered with the whole pyramid scheme thing as it doesn't even make sense since they've said it's going to be a relatively open beta).
