A wizard is never late. Nor is he ever early. He arrives precisely when he means to!

If Salem gets written in Java, then people will be REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, sad.

The latest JDK is crap these days, it gives up performance for 'portability'.

If it's written in C or C++, good for you!

Starting to get fed up with my Programming courses with this college, who sticks Java into every Computer Programmer student and makes them learn it as the basics...
I think the college is biased with bribes and 'incentives' because apparently the 'textbook' that gets used for the courses every year is BY THE SAME EXACT AUTHOR!

If I can get through this program without messing up again, count myself lucky.

But yeah, it hopefully won't be in Java...

A) It's no secret that the client is being done in Java. That has always been the plan and there are no plans, ever (that I'm aware of), to ever change that

B) Java has always given up performance for portability and security. That's the nature of the platform. It's a programming language for the internet age when a web based entity can't know what machine they'll be connecting to. (I won't even get into the various embedded systems, such as vending machines, that can run Java.) I will agree that there are areas of the language that have decreased in performance over the years to improve stability, portability, or security, but that's true of all evolving systems. If we lived in a world of pink fluffy goodness and beauty, we'd not need all the security and stability fixes that slow down any platform.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

client is java, server is c. iirc there is a bit of lisp on the server as well.

i'm sure loftar can make a cogent argument about why java doesn't really have performance issues. i'll leave that to him if he desires to do it.
