When describing it to people, I call Salem "Haven 2.0". It's not a copy, but it definitely evolved from Haven. Many of the systems are attempted improvements over the Haven systems. Gluttony moving to no hunger bar for leveling because that seemed a useless mechanic. A new take on the skill and LP system again, further evolving past the curiosities, but still based on them.

As for the gameplay, you're right pain, I'm speculating. But Salem will play like Haven in the same sense that Wurm plays like Haven. Open world, crafting based, sandbox MMO's have a theme to them. And seeing as Salem appears to evolve from Haven, I doubt that theme will have been lost.
Lucky: haven is so quirky
Lucky: can be so ugly, can be so heartwarming

So far I'd describe Salem as more "on rails" than a sandbox.
