Aisha, I'm currently using a i965 GPU on Sandybridge with Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop. I am happy with the performance of Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri, Wesnoth, Freeciv, Haven, and many other great games. Perhaps I have made a mistake with my order of the Dell Inspiron. I did do some research and saw that under Windows this soc plays Minecraft and League of Legends at roughly 30 fps. I have no idea if these games are more demanding than our new version of Haven. Some say that the Intel drivers in mainline Linux are lacking compared to Windows. I have no point of reference in this regard .

While I have seen Dell offers in other countries, their attempt to sell laptops with Linux support is new to me where I live. I choose to support them so I might encourage this corporation to support Linux. I do know that my voice is only one and that I may have made a mistake in hoping to play the new Haven on such a machine. If others voice advice against this machine I will cancel my order and tell them of my choice. They should not throw us old rotten bones if that is what they are doing. I'm not rich so if you have an opinion say it and I will end this order and find another way! Reply soon as clocks tick here... All advice is welcome as I'm not a 3D gamer and that is the new way Haven is heading. I am happy with the graphics as they are now but I welcome a new version and new adventures and the new graphics. But what machine do I need to purchase? Please help if you can. :)

How is this even possible? I'm pretty sure there are no GMA965 chipsets for SNB CPUs, and even if there were it would seem kind of pointless since SNB CPUs contain their own much better GPU anyway. Also, didn't you just say you had a Silvermont Pentium rather than a SNB?

Maybe the computer is some sort of modern art where the potential of the SNB CPU is being wasted by a lesser graphics chip symbolizing humanity's wasting of its own potential.

I guess this is what established that confusion: ;)
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/i965-va-driver

https://packages.debian.org/jessie/video/i965-va-driver

Which is for Intel HD (2000/4000) GMA on Sandy -Bridge aswell

And he's thinking of buying a Silvermont Notebook from what i read

Without having exact specs of the NB you're using now and the one you've choosen - we even can't tell whether it would be a step back ...

Code: Select all
HD Graphics 4000                 16 EU@ 350 - 1350 (Boost) MHz   64/128 Bit
HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge)   6 EU @ 350 - 1100 (Boost) MHz   64/128 Bit
HD Graphics (Bay Trail)           4 EU@ 311 - 896 (Boost) MHz   32/64/128 Bit

EU - Execution Units

Well, I will admit I don't know much about the Silvermont core. I did hear Bay Trail was a lot better than Bonnell, but I can't say I know how it compares relative to the Core µarchs. I don't think one should underestimate, however, just how underwhelming the Atom GPUs are. Not that I've tried them, but 4 EUs sounds like they've gone with the smallest configuration they could get working.

Ah, right, of course. Well, I think it's probably safe to say, then, that his current CPU, at least, is better than the Silvermont in every respect. As for the GPU, it's hard to tell as SNB GPUs come in many configurations.

better go for a Intel Core i7-5550U Notebook with HD 6000 with 48 EU and a TDP of 15Watts ;)
(graphics power max. comparable to Nvidia M820 )

While i personally wouldn't buy Dell because of their crappy website with zillions scripts leading anywhere ...
(even if they do a good service and have ok prices ...)

Hi Jorbtar, been playing since world 4, had some time out, now back for more.
New stuff looks awesome, but occurred to me that maybe now is time to make old haven able to be run on personal servers? I for one would be willing to pay money to be able to play old haven without grievers. Just putting it out there.
You guys have given me a lot of pleasure, here and in Salem, and wanted to say thanks for that.
