Because it's a journey, and not a destination?

A month or two of work is all that should be required to reach end game, end game in this being running a large village, trading, going to war, and creating your empire. Not to mention being able to stay alive.

I'd imagine the majority of veterans have only started completely fresh when the worlds were reset and then they didn't have to worry about getting ganked by 600 str asshats. Try starting a fresh character now and see how far you get.
This game is even more anti-social than eve, nobody talks in game chat, everyone runs away when they see a person. The only method of grouping with others to survive is going out of game to the forums and hoping whoever answers your post is a decent person.
