Let's sum this up for the hard of understanding (and I'll admit I was scratching my head for a minute about why people wanted it to shut down, but I realized why in just a few moments of thought...).
There are three possible actions to make it through this period of time. Each one has pretty simple reasons as to why people want it and reasons to not honor it.
1. Tough it out and play through it: Why? People do still want to play, and not playing when others might be playing just isn't an option. Reasons to not do it: You gotta be a masochist to play through a game that is lagging so hard you can't do anything, and that takes a *special* personality.
2. Give up fighting and just let the game go until it gets fixed. Why? There's no point in beating your head against a wall when there is no foreseeable future to the end of the lag. At least last summer when there were serious server issues, they were fixed in a week or two and it was obvious what the issues were. Now... who knows when it will be fixed? Reasons to not choose this: You've put in tons of effort to get your livestock to the level they are. Not feeding them just isn't an option.
3. Server is "stopped" until issues are fixed and people can play within reason. Why? A lot of people have put in a lot of work to get to where they are and shouldn't see those efforts go to waste over technical issues that have no fix in sight. If I had Q200 cattle, I wouldn't want them to die, either. Reasons to not do this: No matter how bad the lag, people are going to want to play and be annoyed until the server comes up.
There's definitely strong reasons to shut the server down until things get fixed, but don't count on it folks. Make a choice. Fussing about anything else is just counter-productive.
I just want to say that when lag got this bad last summer with the data corruption and drive problems, I couldn't play through the lag, either. I had, at best, q60-70 cattle and chickens, and I just wasn't that attached to my settlement. That was my choice, though, and I'm a pretty casual hermit on this game. There's a half dozen other games I went and played while waiting on the lag to level out to playable levels, which it did after a few weeks. I can completely understand why people want the server shut down in the interim, though, and I don't blame them for asking for it.
