You should be able to kill small critters while riding a wagon, though. Chickens, rabbits and such.

How about making small "ford" areas in rivers randomly which are shallow all the way across. Players could walk across them, wagons could drive through them, and animals could be walked across them while leashed, while carts would be unable to cross. This way the wagons can always get from place to place, but you have to look for places to cross, and it'd make animals more accessible to those not on grasslands.

Well, the maps are already generated, so there isn't a whole lot to do about them at this point. It would be nice if that were a feature from the next map generator, however.
