Whence you have created your new character, you will be given a tombstone option that you can click on to Inherit your previous character. That character becomes the most recent in your line of "ancestors" then. From there, his previous ancestors, in order, back to total of 3 (I think) are used to determine your "ancestors' stats". If the character had the "fake ancestors" that are started out, then two of them are included in those 3.
