On the contrary, if we add it now we can *never* remove it later without a gale force shitstorm. Better to try it out early on while the game is still small and more in flux.

I came to this game expecting a realistic survival sandbox RP, and the idea of watching players develop in that environment was interesting too. Alts make life easier and more fun, but it kills what in principle makes haven so unique for me, which is that things are not supposed to be easy. Living alone in the wilderness is supposed to be hard to the point of being unbearable, that is why humanity banded together to form groups, tribes, and cities - people need mutual support to stay alive. In an improbable world without alts hermitting would be very challenging, and players would be forced to live together in order to survive. There could be features to balance this, as someone else suggested before, such as hermitages being camouflaged and difficult to detect by others. So basically a hermit's life would be harsher, but they would be undisturbed. A man can dream.

At any rate, if removing alts is impossible, is there a way to make them less useful? Couldn't the village idol have an interface for you to buy some of the features alts are used for - item storage, timed gate closing, trade, etc? If the belief system was removed, I suppose specialization won't be as important, isn't it?

Just a quick question about the world borders. Do they exist this world as well? or they were sneakily removed as to make the world round shaped as in walk enough west your character shows up on the east side of the world eventually.

Probably not. (cq: still flat square with hard borders.)
Unless there in a even more, than expected, experimental mood.

To be fair, we have at times entertained speculations on maintaining a separate server with extremely stringent human verification requirements to play on, including but not limited to manual passport check and constant facecam requirement. ^^

i see - you're working towards a contract with Microsoft :P ;)

"Cortana - what's my Coords?"

btw. i personally don't see the "not being able to spawn with friends at the same spot in the beginning of the world" as a problem - even in a world double the size of W7 i'd find my way ... or my friends ... i like the idea a lot (even while i already know with whom i'd team up and think all of them are able to find each other at last)

It certainly isn't an ideal method and I do realize the simple script Runescape uses is fairly easy to overcome, it was just an example. My point was that if human verification was being considered, there are viable ways in which it could be implemented. Hell, you could have a player verifying their presence without even realizing they are doing it if you get creative enough.

Quite simply anything short of instant verification can be faked. It may take more work on more elaborate programs but never underestimate a persons resolve to overcome that they do not like or wish to do. Ironic isn't it. One can spend hours overcoming a security system but not want to put hours into playing. Says a lot I think :)

I know but I also believe the saying a lock only keeps an honest man honest applies here and personally we have more "honest men" around these parts that are happy to make use of the work of the knowledgeable.

How does that stop alt spams and how does that fit in with we want a less predetermined world.

Only Alts made while in the charterer creation screen would be able to join you in game. Any Alt after that would have to try and navigate to your location to be useful with the random spawning. But I think this idea would help reduce alts that are meant to be thrown away giving way to having characters that players actually care for. As for a less predetermined world I wouldn't know I was mostly focused on a way to reduce the usefulness of alts while still being able to spawn in with friends you wish to play the game with.
