iirc he has to rewrite some or all of the software to work with a 64-bit system. If it were a simple question of OS, I'm sure it'd have been done long ago.

Using 64-bit OS and 4+GB of RAM is something that would give server much much more RAM to use than only 3GB. It doesn't rly need to be rewritten so much, first server must be able to use all RAM and it should have it enough.

no it doesn;t

if you use 32bit os on server it mean that it cant use more then 3 gb but it dont mean game use all 3gb, OS use some ram aswell.
let;s say os use only 200 mb but its still something. Regarding to 2800 which is all the time.

So if you change to 64bit and if its really true that 32bit aplication can run only 3gb it will be still 3.2gb before server crash.

Also remember that most developed players here have 2 or more accounts so they can trade, work non stop, and kill the server few times a day.

the physical ram isn't the problem, nor is the os. the game server has problems addressing virtual memory above 3gb.

Problem is not the real amount of memory the OS uses, problem is how the total memory space (4GB adressable by 2^32 bit) is partitioned between the application and the rest of the system (so app can call the OS, do I/O etc).

So if you change to 64bit and if its really true that 32bit aplication can run only 3gb it will be still 3.2gb before server crash.

This sentence dosn't make any sense.
