I'm fairly sure dwarf fortress allows crafting with the bones of your enemies (inc humans), although dwarves don't do it because of a setting in their ethics file.

Dwarves won`t craft from dwarves bones at all, unless you cheat the settings.

I was indeed thinking the same-race though. My bad. Humans are NPCs, not other players characters in DF. Still, "appalling".
