Right before we started working on Salem, we were, in fact, on the verge of implementing payment for Haven. I still stop once in a while to try and imagine what the alternate universe in which we pursued that path instead looks like today.

Community gave you suggestions to implement and make better game. We were even prepared to pay a little money each months to play...

But you two developers are the most stubborn bulls on earth with only your tunnel vision of a game that only few like.
If you want to make money and live on one game, you have to make it more likeable to people.

Well now it's too late. Salem is gone and Haven is on path downward. GG.

If you are prepared to pay a bit each month, click the gigantic ''DONATE'' button to fund their game. And if they wanted to make money off of it and make it into a proper living, don't you think they would have implemented that system anyway? They're giving you a free game and yet you find reasons to complain.

IMO donations would be higher if they did a monthly statement, like Toady One does for DF.

And if they actually made it clear where the money goes to

Yes. It's not an opinion I think, that is probably a fact. :D But that doesn't mean they have to.

This is a pretty old thread, but it outlined some current expenses at the time and pretty much summed up what their intent on using the money was:

jorb wrote:The money you have been kind enough to donate has been spent solely on those hardware upgrades, and our basic philosophy is that that is what we will use donated money for.

Now whether they have stuck to that, I will let you decide if you feel they have or not, but I'm sure that donations have probably declined since then, and they have had to make several harddrive replacements/server upgrades since then, and I would assume those things were funded by this account.

It wouldn't be bad to have a thread dedicated to such things, and everything written black on white what is needed at certain point and how much "funds" missing to complete the purchase. That way people can help by donating and in same time there is a record of where the donation goes to. Not that that is a needed things, but just to comfort those who have such thoughts.

IDK, if you lay out the budget point by point personal expenses can discourage people from donating, even though everything up to a normal pay rate for professional game developers is more than reasonable.

Well I'm just thinking from my point of view, by following lots of streamers lately. It came to few occasions where they needed something and just didn't want to spend their own things on the updates, so after they opened public gathering process it was like very short term and they gathered the funds for it.

Of course this is not necessary the case here as well but it might work. (like new SSD needed, 0/160€ atm. might encourage people to throw in few bucks to help out, while if that wouldn't be here they wouldn't even know its needed)

I think it would encourage donation more than hinder it. Even if they just stated they spend the money for personal things but they make it clear that donations encourage them to put more effort into haven, that'd be enough for me. I have no idea whether a donation would encourage them to put more effort into Haven or if it'd be useless regarding haven, considering there are hardly any updates and no indication that donations are a driving factor in development.
