The way I see it, the solution seems to be:

  • Improvements need to be made to the standard combat system to allow more play and counterplay which would increase the skill while still favoring a stat-advantage
  • Combat itself needs to be nerfed so that knocking out an opponent is not a matter of 1 hit

For the time being, without much dev-involvement I believe movement combat needs to be completely removed in the sense that taking a hit moving is no different than taking one standing still. While this may upset the players that so love Haven's current oh so skillful system, instead of complaining about it they should explore and master the traditional combat system in order to provide feedback and suggest changes to help jorb/loftar improve it.

He still believes himself to be relatively new despite the studying he does because he had no practical experience outside from familiar territory. That is he has little knowledge of the other factors that are relevant such as potential exploits. I think the gist is that his domain of combat isn't wide enough. Do not get me wrong, he is a respectable combatant but is also a bit limited as well.

He was regarded as a master of combat at the time in its traditional sense the fact that he still considered himself a novice only goes to show that traditional combat is not devoid of skill

Why doesn't armor protect you from, say, sting? When we try to crunch the numbers it seems to be the case that an equivalent suit of armor should do a decently good job of saving yo ass from getting one-shotted.

It does. They are over-exaggerating. It takes like 1000 strength and a q120+ sword to 1-shot someone with low-medium constitution.

wha?

(edit)
all armor has weaknesses in it. the better swordsman and more experience you have at fighting, the better you are at knowing armor weakness as well as overall general skill of someone who you are fighting.

If my opponent is holding a katana like a baseball bat, it gives me insight. just the same if my opponent is huffing and puffing in his plate after a few swings and his shield's a sagging. . .
